U.S. Space Force Implements Florida Tech Graduate's Microburst Prediction Tool
Zachary Kopel developed a microburst forecasting tool that is now utilized by the U.S. Space Force to enhance launch safety. The tool's predictive capabilities are crucial for assessing wind threats during rocket launches.

The U.S. Space Force is employing a forecasting tool developed by Florida Tech graduate Zachary Kopel to predict dangerous wind events such as microbursts. This tool, known as the Microburst Day Potential Index, integrates weather data from balloon soundings processed through a Python physics engine, predicting microburst likelihood on a daily basis.
Testing against 31 events, it achieved a 93% identification rate for microbursts while reducing false alarms from 77% to 54%. The model, trained on nine years of data, provides a percentage chance of wind events, aiding decision-making for rocket launches. Its implementation aims to enhance safety protocols during critical launch operations.
