Uttar Pradesh Approves 2026 Water Reuse Policy with CSE Support for Sustainable Management
The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has approved the Safe Reuse of Treated Water Policy, 2026, aiming for 50% treated water reuse by 2030. The policy, supported by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), outlines a five-phase roadmap to enhance water management, reduce freshwater dependence, and lower river pollution. Uttar Pradesh's cabinet approved the Safe Reuse of Treated Water Policy, 2026, targeting 50% safe reuse of treated water by 2030, supported by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). The policy includes five phases, with the first phase aiming for 50% reuse in areas with operational sewage treatment plants (STPs) and 100% by 2030.
It also proposes 30% reuse in non-STP areas by 2030, followed by 50% by 2035 and 100% by 2045. The initiative focuses on agriculture, industry, and urban landscaping to reduce freshwater use. Agra and Prayagraj are developing City-Level Reuse Action Plans, with projects worth Rs 1,625 crore and Rs 93 crore, respectively, to facilitate treated water reuse.
