Viet Nam Announces Carbon Credit Framework Effective July 2026
Viet Nam will implement a new decree on July 15, 2026, allowing businesses to purchase forest carbon credits. This initiative establishes a legal framework for carbon trading, aiming to enhance forest management and community participation in carbon markets.

Starting July 15, 2026, Viet Nam's decree will enable businesses to acquire forest carbon credits, supporting emission reductions. The framework includes mechanisms for service providers, payment structures, and project development, recognizing carbon credits as tradable assets.
Facilities exceeding emission quotas can offset excess emissions via forest carbon services, while local and foreign entities can voluntarily engage in these programs. Payments can be made directly or indirectly through designated funds.
The decree encourages participation from local communities and households, promoting sustainable forest management and equitable revenue distribution. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment will oversee the development of national standards and verification processes.
