Vikings: The German Navy's Starfighter Demo Team and Its Legacy
The Vikings, a German Navy demo team flying F-104 Starfighters, showcased over 60 performances worldwide from 1983 to 1986. Their operations reflect the historical significance of the Starfighter aircraft in military aviation during the Cold War era.

The German Navy's demonstration team, known as the Vikings, performed its inaugural display on August 14, 1983, using F-104G Starfighters. Over three years, they captivated approximately 6 million spectators across more than 60 performances globally.
The F-104 Starfighter, utilized by Germany with 916 units, was integral to naval operations in the North and Baltic Seas, succeeding older aircraft models. The Vikings initially performed an eight-minute routine that expanded to twelve minutes due to their success.
Their highlight was a North American tour in August 1986. Following this, the aircraft were repainted in a special color scheme, but operations ceased on September 27, 1986, with the retirement of the F-104. MFG 1 transitioned to the Tornado in 1981, marking a shift in the German Armed Forces' aviation capabilities.
