The St. Landry Parish Council has approved a tax agreement enabling Walmart to expand its distribution center in Opelousas by $330 million. This deal is projected to generate millions in revenue for the parish over the next 15 years while ensuring the retention of over 1,100 jobs.
Walmart's investment will include $276 million focused on upgrading and automating the facility, with a 50% tax abatement provided by the parish. The company will transition from a pilot program to a tax-paying entity, contributing approximately $600,000 annually.
Walmart has assured that no jobs will be lost due to automation, and current employees will be offered advancement opportunities. This strategic investment follows two years of negotiations.
