Wando County and U.S. Partner on Seaweed Biomass Production Project to Advance Marine Economy

CARBON CAPTURE

Wando County, South Korea, is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy on a five-year international project focused on offshore seaweed farming technology, set to run from 2025 to 2029. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the U.S.

Department of Energy aim to develop mass-scale open-ocean seaweed farming and blue carbon utilization technologies. A business agreement was signed on December 6 to establish a test bed in the southeastern waters of Cheongsan-myeon, leveraging Wando's status as Korea's largest seaweed producer.

The project involves 300 researchers from 29 organizations and 12 universities, led by the Korea Institute of Marine Science and Technology. The gathered data will support future initiatives like carbon credits and the Wando-type Ocean Pension. Additional goals include developing biomass utilization technology and establishing a foundation for Blue Carbon certification.
