Washington State Allocates $500K for IonQ Quantum Expansion Project
A $500,000 state investment aims to enhance IonQ's quantum computing facility in Bothell, projected to create 2,000 jobs. This funding, alongside $14 million in private investment, underscores Washington's commitment to advancing technology and job growth in the region.

The state of Washington has allocated $500,000 from the Economic Development Strategic Reserve Fund to support IonQ's quantum computing expansion in Bothell. This initiative is expected to generate between 1,200 and 2,000 jobs over the next five years, with an initial 100 engineering positions anticipated within 18 months, each averaging $177,000 in salary.
The funding will be used for building upgrades and workforce costs, complementing over $14 million in private investment already secured. IonQ, which opened its dedicated quantum manufacturing facility in Bothell in 2024, is focused on leveraging quantum technology for advanced computing applications.
The expansion reflects Washington's strategic focus on fostering technological innovation and large-scale employment opportunities, positioning the state as a leader in emerging industries. However, concerns about the pace of investment and coordination in the region's tech ecosystem persist among industry leaders.
