Water Consumption by Industries in Waarderpolder Under Scrutiny
The Waarderpolder is facing water management challenges, particularly for companies reliant on large water volumes. As drought conditions worsen in the Netherlands, local businesses, including datacenters and breweries, need to adapt their water usage strategies.

The Waarderpolder area is experiencing increased pressure on water resources, particularly affecting businesses that consume substantial amounts of water. Notably, datacenter Iron Mountain, which uses 75 to 100 million liters annually for cooling, has been denied additional drinking water from PWN, necessitating enhanced water recycling efforts.
Meanwhile, Jopen Bier brewery has reduced its water usage from 12 liters to 6.8 liters per liter of beer, totaling approximately 27 million liters yearly. In contrast, the entire Haarlem population consumes around 7 billion liters annually, highlighting that residential water use, particularly from showers, accounts for more significant waste than industrial consumption. The situation necessitates a reevaluation of water management practices within the region.
