Waterloo Region Halts New Development Approvals Amid Water Supply Capacity Issues
The Region of Waterloo has suspended new development approvals due to insufficient water supply capacity, impacting housing and economic growth. With a projected population increase to one million by 2050, the halt affects planned developments and threatens jobs. Initial solutions are long-term, including infrastructure upgrades and new pumping stations. Stakeholder groups have been invited to discuss water conservation and potential solutions.

The Region of Waterloo has paused new development applications due to a water supply capacity issue identified in the Mannheim Service Area, which serves Kitchener, Waterloo, and other municipalities. This decision halts a billion-dollar building industry, affecting the construction of housing necessary for a projected population increase to one million by 2050.
Stakeholder groups, including Build Urban and the Waterloo Region Home Builders Association, have been invited to discuss potential solutions. Long-term plans involve infrastructure upgrades, including a new pumping station. The region has stated that current residents are not affected, and construction under existing permits will continue.
