Wheatbelt Farmer Implements Carbon Farming Strategies to Enhance Soil Health and Profitability

CARBON CAPTURE

Gina Wood, a Wheatbelt farmer, operates Six Hundred Acre Wood, a 243-hectare farm near Bakers Hill, integrating carbon farming with mohair production from 200 SRS Angora goats. The farm, which is certified organic and adheres to the Responsible Mohair Standard, employs sustainable practices including no-till and no-cull philosophies to preserve soil health.

Dr. Wood established a soil carbon baseline in April 2024, which confirmed that her methods are effective in retaining soil carbon. Supported by Western Australia's Carbon for Farmers Voucher Program, she received a Tier 1 voucher to conduct a feasibility study for carbon farming projects aimed at enhancing biodiversity and improving farm productivity.

The funding facilitates professional mapping and financial modeling to support the integration of deep-rooted perennial shrubs for carbon sequestration. Dr. Wood emphasizes the importance of data-driven decisions in farming sustainability.
