Wilmington Council Approves Waste Ban and Fire Department Restructuring
Wilmington City Council approved ordinances on public waste management and fire department restructuring during its meeting on August 6. The waste ordinance introduces penalties for public urination and defecation, while the fire department's new structure aims to enhance operational efficiency for future growth.

Wilmington City Council passed Ordinance O-26-46, establishing penalties for public urination and defecation, with a first offense classified as a minor misdemeanor and repeat offenses as a fourth-degree misdemeanor. This ordinance aims to support enforcement measures, which police officials believe were overdue.
Additionally, Ordinance O-26-36 restructures the Wilmington Fire Department, introducing positions such as a chief, assistant chief, and up to 24 firefighter/EMTs, replacing outdated provisions from a 2006 ordinance. This restructuring anticipates economic development needs, particularly related to potential future projects, including a data center.
Council will hold public hearings on related zoning amendments on August 20. The implementation of these changes may influence community perceptions and operational readiness in Wilmington.
