Wirral Council Advances Birkenhead Heat Network Project for Sustainable Heating Solutions
Wirral Council plans to award the tender for the Birkenhead Heat Network, aiming to provide cheaper, sustainable heating for homes and businesses. The project will utilize a Water Source Heat Pump to harness waste heat, contributing to decarbonization efforts. The network is projected to save over 250,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and will target new homes and commercial developments in a priority district heating zone.

Wirral Council is moving forward with plans for the Birkenhead Heat Network, recommending a preferred supplier for the project following the procurement process. The network aims to provide efficient heating for existing and new homes and businesses, supported by Government funding.
Utilizing a Water Source Heat Pump, the network will harness waste heat from local industrial sources, significantly reducing carbon emissions. Once operational, it could save over 250,000 tonnes of carbon over its lifetime and will also serve various public institutions, including colleges and NHS bodies.
