Worcester Councillors Support Heat Pumps in New Homes, Call for Job Protection
Green councillors in Worcester support a mandate for heat pumps and solar panels in new homes by 2028 but urge government action to protect local manufacturing jobs at Worcester Bosch. The transition away from gas boilers requires investment to maintain production and employment in the city. While new homes will not connect to the gas network, the lack of a mandatory battery installation requirement is a concern for maximizing energy efficiency and cost savings.

Worcester Green councillors welcome the UK government's plan to mandate heat pumps and solar panels in all new homes by 2028. They emphasize the need for government support to protect jobs at Worcester Bosch, which produces 400,000 boilers annually and is transitioning to heat pump manufacturing.
From 2028, new homes will not connect to the gas network. However, the absence of a requirement for battery installations is seen as a downside. Councillors argue that batteries are essential for energy storage and maximizing savings. Local MP Tom Collins is exploring options for a community energy company to help residents access sustainable energy solutions.
