Xcel Energy's Power Pathways Project Faces Opposition in El Paso County
El Paso County's rejection of Xcel Energy's Power Pathways project could delay a $1.7 billion transmission line crucial for renewable energy integration. The project aims to support 5,500 megawatts of new energy capacity by 2030, but local opposition may impact its completion timeline.

Xcel Energy's Power Pathways project, a $1.7 billion initiative, aims to connect a new substation in Pueblo County to another in Arapahoe County via a double-circuit 345-kilovolt line in eastern El Paso County. The project has been approved by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission as of spring 2022 but faces opposition from local residents and the El Paso County Commissioners, who denied necessary permits.
This project is designed to facilitate the integration of 5,500 megawatts of renewable energy by 2030. Delays in permits could hinder the project's completion, affecting grid reliability and state greenhouse gas reduction efforts. A ruling from the Colorado Public Utilities Commission regarding the county's decision is expected on April 29.
