Zelenskyy Calls for Funding Support from Coalition of the Willing Amid EU Membership Delays
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the Coalition of the Willing to establish funding mechanisms for Ukraine's defense forces during a European Council meeting. While the coalition seeks to provide long-term support to Ukraine, significant opposition from Hungary has stalled the acceleration of Ukraine's EU accession process, potentially delaying membership until 2037.

President Zelenskyy has requested the Coalition of the Willing to explore reliable funding avenues for Ukraine's military. The coalition, which includes key contributors like the UK and France, aims to support Ukraine's defense and peace efforts post-conflict.
Despite backing for Ukraine's EU membership bid at the summit, Hungary led opposition to fast-tracking the accession process, resulting in a diluted summit statement. Hungary's Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, indicated that the proposal for accelerated accession was removed after intensive debates.
This opposition reflects broader divisions within the EU on Ukraine's integration and communication with Russia. The financial burden of supporting Ukraine continues to rise, with an estimated need for an additional €19 billion by 2027, even as the EU allocates funds for military and defense initiatives.
