Zimbabwe's Platinum Refinery Initiative Gains Support from Major Producers
Leading platinum companies in Zimbabwe commit to local refining efforts, aligning with government mandates to enhance domestic processing and revenue retention.

Major platinum producers in Zimbabwe, including Anglo American Platinum and Impala Platinum, have pledged support for the establishment of a local platinum refinery. This initiative is crucial as the Zimbabwean government has indicated that mining firms could face a ban on platinum exports if refinery projects are not completed by the end of the current year.
The Zimbabwean Platinum Producers Association confirmed that the refinery project is economically viable and emphasized the need for substantial infrastructure, including 150 megawatts of electricity. Zimbabwe, which holds the second-largest platinum reserves globally, aims to boost annual production from 430,000 ounces to over 500,000 ounces, requiring an estimated US$5.3 billion in investment for both production expansion and refinery construction. This strategic shift towards domestic mineral processing reflects Zimbabwe's broader goal to maximize revenue from its mineral resources.
