£100M Energy Storage Project in Northern Ireland Supported by Swiss Investor
The £100 million long duration energy storage project in Islandmagee, Northern Ireland, will provide power for 36,000 homes daily, enhancing local energy security. The partnership between Solo Renewables and Capital Dynamics marks a significant investment in renewable energy infrastructure, vital for integrating increasing renewable generation into the grid.

A £100 million long duration energy storage (LDES) project is set to be developed off the Antrim coast by Solo Renewables and Swiss asset manager Capital Dynamics, enhancing Northern Ireland's energy security. Planned for operation by 2029, this 150 megawatt system will offer up to 1,200 MWh of storage capacity, powering approximately 36,000 homes daily.
The project has already received planning approval from Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. The existing Moyle Interconnector will support this initiative, and further regulatory developments in renewable energy are expected to bolster investment in storage solutions. Long-duration storage is essential for balancing supply and demand as renewable energy sources grow, addressing rising curtailment rates and ensuring grid stability.
