2025 Sees Emergence of Renewable Ammonia Supply Chains in China, Australia, and Europe

In 2025, significant advancements in renewable ammonia supply chains were noted, particularly in northeastern China, where Envision Energy's Chifeng Net Zero Hydrogen Industrial Park began operations, aiming for 5 million tons of renewable ammonia annually. Additional supply chains were established by China Energy Engineering Group in Songyuan, expected to produce 800,000 tons yearly.

In Australia, the Pilbara Ports Authority initiated the 'Pilbara Clean Fuel Bunkering Hub' strategy for low-carbon marine fuels. Meanwhile, Rotterdam advanced towards ammonia bunkering commercial operations following a pilot project.

Several ammonia production facilities became operational, including in China, Germany, Spain, and the USA, with more expected in 2026. Despite governmental support, projects struggle to reach Final Investment Decision (FID). The International Maritime Organization (IMO) postponed the adoption of a new net-zero framework, creating uncertainty in the sector's regulatory landscape, while developments in ammonia cracking and emissions management technologies progressed.
