2D Photonics Secures €211 Million EU-Approved Grant for Graphene Technology
The European Commission has approved €211 million in Italian state aid for 2D Photonics' subsidiary CamGraPhIC, marking a significant investment in deep-tech. This funding aims to enhance data movement speeds in AI and computing systems through advanced graphene photonics technology.

The European Commission has granted €211 million in state aid to CamGraPhIC, a subsidiary of 2D Photonics Group S.p.A, to develop graphene-based optical technology for AI applications. This funding, one of the largest public investments in an Italian deep-tech startup, will support the establishment of a pilot manufacturing facility near Milan, scheduled to start operating in 2028 and expected to create over 150 jobs.
The project's focus is on addressing data flow limitations in current AI systems by providing higher bandwidth density, lower latency, and reduced energy consumption. The company previously raised €25 million in a Series A funding round in March 2025 from multiple investors, including the NATO Innovation Fund. This initiative underscores the growing significance of innovative technologies in enhancing AI infrastructure globally.
