SSEN Distribution is set to invest £55 million in Orkney's electricity infrastructure to enhance reliability and capacity. Key upgrades include new substations and increased underground cabling, scheduled to start in spring 2027 and complete by 2030.

SSEN Distribution has announced a £55 million investment in Orkney's electricity network aimed at bolstering resilience and accommodating future growth. Key elements include a new grid supply point at Finstown, a primary substation at New Hatston, and reinforcement work at St Mary's to improve capacity to several surrounding areas.
The project will also facilitate a new connection for Orkney Islands Council's windfarm at Quanterness. Construction is set to begin in spring 2027, with completion expected around 2030. Potential risks include disruption during construction and environmental impacts, though efforts to minimize these have been stated.
