Consumers Energy has proposed a $70 million battery energy storage system, the Weadock Battery Energy Storage System, at a former coal-fired plant site in Hampton Township, MI. The 45 MW facility, featuring 36 lithium iron phosphate batteries, aims to improve grid reliability and is expected to generate property tax revenue and create jobs. A public hearing to review the special use permit is scheduled for February 12.

The project includes a 45 MW facility with 36 lithium iron phosphate batteries and aims to enhance grid reliability.
A public hearing will be held on Feb. 12 to review the special use permit. The installation is expected to generate property tax revenue and create jobs. Consumers Energy plans to connect the system to its existing electrical substation at the Karn generation facility, with a service lifespan of 30 years.
