ABB to Supply Drive Technology for Harmony's Eva Copper Project in Australia
ABB has secured a contract to provide gearless and ring-geared mill drives for Harmony Gold's Eva copper project in Queensland. The project, with an expected output of 60,000 tons of copper per year over a 15-year lifespan, is crucial for meeting growing global copper demand, projected to rise by 24% by 2035.

ABB will deliver gearless mill drive (GMD) and ring-geared mill drive (RMD) systems for Harmony Gold Mining Company's Eva copper project in Queensland. The project aims to produce approximately 60,000 tons of copper annually over a minimum 15-year life, with a significant capital investment between $1.55 billion and $1.75 billion approved in November 2025.
The GMD system will power a 12 m semi-autogenous grinding mill, while an 18 MW RMD system will support an 8 m ball mill. Local manufacturing and integration are expected to enhance efficiency. The contract underscores the increasing demand for critical minerals in large-scale mining projects, driven by the energy transition.
