Abia State Secures $700M World Bank Water Project Funding
Abia State has been selected to receive $700 million through the World Bank's SURWASH Programme to enhance water supply and sanitation. This investment highlights international confidence in the state's governance reforms and aims to improve essential services for underserved communities.

Abia State is set to benefit from a $700 million investment under the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) Programme from the World Bank. This funding aims to enhance access to clean water and sanitation services across the state.
The state's ongoing governance reforms have attracted attention from multilateral development partners, as noted by Commissioner Okey Kanu. Additionally, a previously suspended USAID project has resumed under new funding from Mercy Corps, focusing on water schemes in Ubakala and Ariaria.
The Abia State Electricity Regulatory Agency issued interim licenses to New Era, Aba Power, and Geometric Power to bolster electricity supply, with a restoration project nearing 85% completion. A 1.8-megawatt solar microgrid project for bus terminals in Umuahia and Aba has also been initiated. The funding and projects could significantly enhance living conditions in Abia, although consistent implementation remains a challenge.
