Abu Dhabi Develops World's Largest Underground Desalinated Water Reserve
Abu Dhabi has developed the largest underground desalinated water reserve, capable of supplying the city for 90 days during emergencies. This initiative marks a shift from traditional water management to a strategic focus on long-term water security, utilizing Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) technology to mitigate risks associated with surface water storage.

Abu Dhabi's new underground desalinated water reserve has a capacity of 26 billion liters, ensuring supply for up to 90 days in emergencies. The investment of AED 1.61 billion highlights the region's commitment to water security, particularly as over 90% of drinking water comes from desalination.
Utilizing Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) technology, the system injects desalinated water into porous rock layers, reducing evaporation risks and environmental contamination. Continuous monitoring maintains water quality and safety. This project sets a precedent for similar initiatives in arid regions, promoting resilience and strategic planning in water management.
