Acciona Leads Innovation in Sustainable Green Methanol Production through Advanced CO2 Electrolysis Technology

HYDROGEN

Acciona is firmly establishing itself as a leader in sustainable water management and innovative energy solutions, particularly through its advanced work in water treatment and reverse osmosis desalination. The company is currently engaged in the ComeCO2 project, a significant initiative aimed at revolutionizing green methanol production. This project seeks to develop a highly efficient system for producing green methanol through high-temperature CO2 electrolysis, directly addressing the maritime sector's substantial carbon footprint.

In traditional methanol production, the reliance on natural gas reforming is not only energy-intensive but also a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. The ComeCO2 project offers a transformative alternative by focusing on a method that generates syngas from captured CO2 and water vapor.

This syngas is then converted into methanol using an advanced catalytic reactor, all integrated within a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). By leveraging biogas-generated CO2 and reclaimed water to produce the necessary steam for the electrolysis process, this approach promises to significantly diminish the carbon footprint associated with methanol production while simultaneously enhancing circularity in water treatment.

The innovative technology developed in the ComeCO2 project is anticipated to achieve process efficiencies exceeding 65% and reduce energy consumption by 25% compared to conventional methods of green methanol production. This not only lowers fuel costs but also reinforces the industrial value chain for synthetic fuels across Spain and Europe.

Acciona's role will encompass the comprehensive study, design, installation, and integration of the methanol synthesis system within a WWTP. Careful consideration will be given to the utilization of CO from sludge digesters and the reuse of treated wastewater.

Additionally, the impact of impurities in CO and water quality on system performance will be meticulously assessed to ensure the system operates effectively within the plant. Through this initiative, Acciona is not only advancing the production of green methanol but also contributing to a more sustainable energy landscape.
