Accu and Twents Keukenzout Aim for EU Independence from Critical Raw Materials
The consortium SLDBatt, led by Exergy Storage, is developing a sodium battery using abundant salt to reduce EU dependence on critical materials. The initiative is supported by a €20 million subsidy from the National Growth Fund, with aims to scale up production for sustainable energy storage by 2030.

SLDBatt, a consortium including Exergy Storage and Nobian, is focused on developing sodium batteries from locally sourced salt, aiming to decrease Europe's reliance on critical raw materials. The project, backed by a €20 million subsidy from the National Growth Fund, targets scaling production of pilot systems by 2030.
The sodium battery offers safety advantages and easier recycling compared to lithium-ion batteries, addressing geopolitical concerns surrounding critical metals. As the energy transition progresses, collaboration among partners is crucial for securing raw materials and ensuring efficient scaling of production processes.
