Activists Demand Action Against Illegal Mining in Belagavi
Social activists in Belagavi have called for an immediate investigation into illegal mineral extraction, highlighting environmental degradation and unauthorized mining activities. Their memorandum to local authorities emphasizes the risk to the sensitive ecological zone and local agriculture, urging swift government intervention.

Social activists Rajkumar Topannavar and Sujeet Mulgund submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan, demanding action against illegal mining along the Belagavi border. They allege extensive illegal extraction of minerals such as bauxite, laterite, and silica in the villages of Khanapur and Belagavi taluk, often conducted without farmers' consent.
Allegations include misuse of mining passes and nighttime operations to evade detection. The activists emphasize the environmental damage caused by these activities, including deforestation, soil erosion, and threats to local wildlife.
They are urging a comprehensive investigation, satellite mapping of affected areas, and a halt to new mining permissions until the inquiry concludes. The ongoing situation poses a serious risk to the fragile ecosystem of the Western Ghats and local agricultural livelihoods.
