ACTOM Commissions Africa's First Fully Digital Substation in Namibia
NamPower has inaugurated Africa's first fully digital substation, the Sekelduin 132/66/33 kV facility near Swakopmund, constructed by ACTOM at a cost of N$394 million ($22.6 million). Utilizing IEC 61850 standards and hybrid switchgear, the substation enhances grid reliability and supports load growth in the Erongo region, while being AI-ready for improved operational efficiency and reduced maintenance costs. This project highlights African engineering capabilities and sets a new standard for future digital substations on the continent.

NamPower has officially commissioned the Sekelduin 132/66/33 kV substation near Swakopmund, Africa's first fully digital substation, built by ACTOM for N$394 million ($22.6 million). The facility improves grid reliability and supports load growth in the Erongo region.
It employs IEC 61850 standards with fibre-optic communication and hybrid switchgear for real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance. The substation is AI-ready, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing maintenance costs.
Its design optimizes space while protecting equipment from harsh conditions. The project showcases African engineering expertise and sets a benchmark for future digital substations across the continent.
