Adnoc Distribution Prepares for Driverless Vehicles with EV Charging Stations in Abu Dhabi
Adnoc Distribution, the UAE's largest fuel and convenience retailer, is positioning itself to support driverless electric vehicles, according to COO Klaas Mantel. The company recently opened the region's largest superfast EV charging station in Abu Dhabi and is exploring opportunities for EV infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
All driverless vehicles in the UAE are electric, aligning with the country's Net Zero by 2050 Strategy. Abu Dhabi has introduced autonomous taxis, including the Robotaxi service by Uber and WeRide. The UAE aims for 50% of vehicles to be battery-electric by 2050, with projections estimating over 15% market share for EVs by 2030.
Demand for charging points is expected to reach 45,000 by 2035, but current rollout rates suggest only 10,000 will be available by then. Adnoc is also exploring sustainable fuels, including natural gas and hydrogen, but currently prioritizes electric vehicle infrastructure.
