Advancements in Ammonia-Based Fuel Systems for Zero-Emission Shipping
The Ammoniadrive project aims to enhance energy efficiency in shipping through innovative ammonia and hydrogen fuel systems. This initiative addresses the critical challenges of combustion efficiency and engine reliability essential for sustainable maritime operations.

The Ammoniadrive project focuses on utilizing ammonia as a sustainable fuel for shipping, integrating it with fuel cells and combustion engines. Research indicates that this hybrid approach could improve energy efficiency by up to ten percent, crucial for reducing operational fuel costs.
Current diesel-ammonia engines do not utilize ammonia effectively at low power levels, unlike the Ammoniadrive system that can draw energy from both ammonia and hydrogen. Over the past six years, development has progressed to real-world testing, yet challenges remain regarding the corrosive nature of ammonia and its effects on engine materials. Future integration into ships will likely coincide with major maintenance cycles, though new ship designs are preferred for optimal implementation.
