Advancements in Desalination Digital Twins and AI Optimization
ACCIONA and Siemens launched the Al Khobar 1 desalination plant in 2020, utilizing a remote digital twin for operations. IDE Technologies and Gradiant are also advancing digital twin capabilities, with potential savings and efficiency improvements in desalination processes.
The Al Khobar 1 desalination plant in Saudi Arabia, commissioned by ACCIONA and Siemens in 2020, achieved its first-water milestone remotely via a digital twin, processing over 40,000 signals. IDE Technologies' Carlsbad plant uses five years of data to model membrane biofouling, estimating $1.5 million in maintenance savings.
Gradiant's SmartOps AI aims for energy consumption below 2 kWh/m³ at a facility, outperforming the 3.5 kWh/m³ benchmark. Current digital twins operate in engineering simulation, predictive monitoring, and optimization.
The latter includes ACCIONA's ACRRO® system and Gradiant's algorithms, achieving up to 18% energy savings in smaller facilities. The integration of reinforcement learning into these systems could enhance operational efficiency further.
