AEP Acquires Longview Power Plant and Gas Expansion Permits
American Electric Power (AEP) is set to purchase the 710 MW Longview Power Plant in West Virginia, enhancing its capacity to meet rising electricity demand. The acquisition includes permits for a new 1,200 MW natural gas plant, addressing the energy needs driven by data center expansions.

AEP plans to acquire the Longview Power Plant in Monongalia County, West Virginia, for an undisclosed sum. The company has also secured permits for a 1,200 MW combined cycle natural gas facility on the same site.
This move aims to bolster capacity as electricity demand increases, particularly due to the rise of data centers and artificial intelligence. AEP, which serves 5.6 million customers across 11 states, intends to enhance service within the PJM regional transmission system.
The Monongalia County Commission has confirmed that AEP will honor the existing payment agreement with local authorities. Potential impacts include strengthened local partnerships and an increased focus on natural gas as a key energy source.
