AERO Urges Italian Government to Advance Offshore Wind Projects Amid Delays

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTUREWIND ENERGY

The Italian offshore wind sector is facing significant delays due to the MASE not initiating tenders for the FER2 decree, published in August 2024. This has left 130 projects in limbo, with only 26 ready for construction, totaling 18.5 gigawatts of potential.

Four projects have received approval for 2.3 gigawatts, while an additional project is awaiting further approval for 500 megawatts. The MASE halted the auction at the end of 2024, citing sufficient competition despite 1.3 gigawatts already authorized.

AERO, representing 63 companies and organizations, emphasizes that each euro invested in the offshore wind industry yields three euros in return, potentially creating 11,400 jobs. If 20 gigawatts are installed, significant benefits could be realized, particularly in Southern Italy.

The delay poses risks of lost investment and energy supply issues for future datacenters. AERO highlights the necessity of a strategic plan to foster Italy's offshore wind capabilities.
