AES Corporation Withdraws Seguro Battery Storage Project in San Diego County
AES Corporation has withdrawn its application for the Seguro Battery Energy Storage System in North San Diego County, concluding a three-year conflict with local communities. This decision reflects ongoing safety concerns surrounding lithium-ion storage facilities, particularly in residential areas.

AES Corporation has formally withdrawn its application for the Seguro Battery Energy Storage System, which was proposed to have a capacity of 320 megawatts, enough to power 240,000 homes for four hours. The project faced significant opposition from residents in Eden Valley, Harmony Grove, and Elfin Forest, culminating in over 5,000 signatures and nearly a thousand letters against it.
Major obstacles included the refusal of easements from Palomar Health and a nearby business park, which were necessary for connecting the facility to the San Diego Gas & Electric substation. Safety concerns have been amplified by recent incidents involving lithium-ion battery storage, including the 2024 Gateway Fire and the 2025 Moss Landing Disaster, raising alarms about potential risks in residential settings. This withdrawal may influence future BESS project siting strategies in California.
