Africa Advances in Aviation Carbon Credits Market Under CORSIA
African nations are positioning to supply carbon credits to the aviation sector via CORSIA, with the DRC leading by approving 750,000 tonnes. This development indicates a growing structured market for carbon offsets in the region, crucial for international emissions compliance.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has approved the issuance of 750,000 tonnes of carbon credits through two clean energy projects, marking a significant initiation of Africa's carbon credits supply to the aviation industry under CORSIA. Following the DRC, countries including Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, and Sierra Leone are expected to participate in this market.
Malawi issued over 1.5 million CORSIA-eligible credits from a cookstove project in 2025, while Tanzania updated its regulations in 2023. Additionally, a southern African alliance formed in March 2026 aims to enhance regional carbon market strategies.
However, regulatory challenges persist, as exemplified by KOKO Networks in Kenya, which ceased operations due to approval issues. Analysts forecast carbon credit prices may surpass $60 per tonne post-2030, indicating potential revenue growth for African nations.
