Africa GreenCo Targets 200 MW in Renewable Energy Trades Across Southern Africa

HYDRO POWER

Africa GreenCo aims to enable 200 MW of renewable energy trades this year. The company operates as the sole regional buyer and trader of renewable energy in Southern Africa, currently in South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, with plans to expand to Angola, Botswana, DRC, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania.

Eskom is increasing its power exports, having raised them by 10.3% in 2025. GreenCo's license from Nersa facilitates the export of surplus power, especially during droughts, and enables the import of hydropower when available.

The regional energy market's stability is crucial, especially with potential disruptions from the Mozal smelter in Mozambique, which could impact jobs and exports. Mpepele highlighted the need for reliable electricity for industrial operations and the growing demand for renewable energy capacity.
