Africa Plans 148 GW Solar Capacity to Address Electricity Access and Climate Goals

ENERGY STORAGESOLAR ENERGY

Africa has announced solar projects totaling approximately 148 GW of capacity, aimed at addressing the electricity needs of 600 million people without power and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The continent's projects include major developments in Northern Africa, such as Libya's 25,000 MW solar project and Mauritania's Megaton Moon project with 30,000 MW capacity.

Chad targets a 30% renewable mix by 2030, with projects like the Noor Chad solar plant. Battery Energy Storage Systems are being integrated to enhance solar power dispatchability, costing around USD 76/MWh overall.

Floating solar projects are underway in Ghana and Zimbabwe. Financing needs for Africa's energy goals are estimated at USD 277 billion annually, with only 11% currently funded. Local manufacturing initiatives, such as Nigeria's 1 GW solar panel plant, accompany these efforts. Regional interconnections, like the Cameroon-Chad project, and initiatives in Southern Africa are designed to facilitate electricity trade and integration.
