African Development Bank Advances Mauritania's Green Hydrogen Initiatives
The African Development Bank (AfDB) is enhancing Mauritania's green hydrogen sector with technical assistance and a $20 million funding initiative. This effort aims to attract private investment and establish a competitive auction framework as part of the country's sustainable energy transition.

The African Development Bank is facilitating Mauritania's green hydrogen ambitions through the Africa Energy Transition Catalyst and the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA). A validation workshop in Nouakchott on April 14-15, 2026, focused on finalizing auction procedures for green hydrogen.
The workshop included over 25 representatives from key government institutions, underscoring broad support for the sector's growth. The country aims to produce 12.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2035 and is a member of the Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance.
Additionally, AfDB's Green Hydrogen Programme has issued a Call for Proposals with up to $20 million available for eligible projects. This initiative is significant for developing a competitive, bankable procurement model, potentially positioning Mauritania as a leading market for green hydrogen in Africa.
