African Rainbow Minerals Considers Nkomati Nickel Mine Reopening Following Boliden Off-Take Agreement
African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) plans to restart operations at the Nkomati nickel mine in South Africa due to an off-take agreement with Boliden AB. This development is significant as it may bolster nickel supply for European markets amidst rising prices driven by production cuts in Indonesia.

African Rainbow Minerals has agreed to a conditional off-take deal with Boliden AB for nickel concentrate from the Nkomati mine, which has been inactive since 2021. The Nkomati mine, South Africa's sole primary nickel resource, was previously placed on care and maintenance due to financial losses.
ARM acquired full ownership from Nornickel in July 2025. The agreement will allow concentrate to be processed at Boliden's Harjavalta smelter in Finland over multiple years, pending ARM board approval and Boliden's due diligence. The partnership aims to enhance the business case for the mine's restart as nickel prices trend upwards, influenced by cuts from Indonesia's production.
