Agriculture Ministry Launches Initiative for Hotel Desalination Units in Response to Water Crisis
The agriculture ministry announced an initiative to install private desalination units at hotels to improve water security as dam levels decline. A €3 million grant scheme approved in March 2025 will support the project, simplifying licensing for units producing up to 1,500 cubic metres daily. The initiative includes collaboration with the tourism sector, which accounted for 6.9% of water supply usage from 2022 to 2024 and contributed 13.1% to GDP in 2024, with expectations of growth to 14% in 2025.

The agriculture ministry has launched an initiative to help hotels install private desalination units to enhance water security amid declining dam levels, currently at 17%. A €3 million grant scheme was approved by the cabinet in March 2025 to expedite the project.
The water development department, in collaboration with the deputy ministry of tourism, informed stakeholders about regulations for units producing up to 1,500 cubic metres of water daily. The tourism sector utilized 6.9% of the water supply from 2022 to 2024 and contributed 13.1% to GDP in 2024, projected to rise to 14% in 2025. 85 hotels are already implementing water-saving measures.
