Aguas Esperanza Consortium Launches $1.5 Billion Water Project for Antofagasta's Centinela Mining Expansion
The Aguas Esperanza consortium, comprising Almar Water Solutions and Transelec, is developing a $1.5 billion water transportation system to support the expansion of the Centinela copper mining district in Chile's Antofagasta region. The project aims to transport seawater to the mine, reducing reliance on freshwater resources and increasing copper production by 144,000 tonnes annually. Macquarie Capital provided financial advisory services, helping secure a total financing package of $1.49 billion and achieving investment-grade debt status.

The Aguas Esperanza consortium has initiated a $1.5 billion project to enhance water infrastructure for the Centinela copper mining district in Antofagasta, Chile. This initiative will utilize seawater, allowing the extraction of an additional 144,000 tonnes of copper annually without desalination.

The project, which includes a 144-kilometre pipeline, aims to double Centinela's copper production capacity over five years while minimizing environmental impacts.
