AI Datacenter Expansion Boosts Lithium Demand Amid Supply Risks
The expansion of AI infrastructure is driving a significant increase in global lithium demand, particularly for Battery Energy Storage Systems, which saw a 51% rise in 2022. As lithium prices surged 120% to $20,000 per ton amid tightening supply, Africa is emerging as a key production hub, while the USA aims to enhance local output to reduce reliance on China. Analysts warn that advancements in battery technology and increased Chinese production could impact future prices.

The expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure is significantly increasing global lithium demand, particularly through Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and electric vehicles. In 2022, demand for BESS rose by 51%, surpassing the 26% increase in electric vehicle demand, although EVs still account for about 75% of global battery consumption.
Lithium prices surged 120% in six months, hitting $20,000 per ton due to tightening supply. Africa is emerging as a key lithium production hub, while the USA seeks to boost local production and reduce dependency on China, investing heavily in lithium projects.
Argentina is expected to double its lithium production by 2029. However, analysts caution that advancements in battery technology and increased Chinese production capacity could affect prices.
