AI-Fabriek to Establish AI Expertise Center and Supercomputer in Groningen
The AI-Fabriek in Groningen is set to establish an expertise center and supercomputer dedicated to AI model development, spearheaded by Samenwerking Noord and partners including TNO, SURF, and the AI Coalition for the Netherlands. With a supervisory board appointed to oversee operations and recruit talent, the initiative aims to bolster IT capabilities in Northern Netherlands, with the supercomputer expected to be operational by late 2027. The center will also facilitate project calls from various companies to ensure the sustainability of the AI ecosystem in the region.

The AI-Fabriek in Groningen will consist of an expertise center and a supercomputer for developing AI models. The initiative, led by Samenwerking Noord and partners TNO, SURF, and the AI Coalition for the Netherlands, aims to enhance IT capabilities in Northern Netherlands.
A supervisory board has been formed with representatives from each consortium partner and Nij Begun. The board's first task is to appoint a director for the AI-Fabriek. Procurement for the supercomputer is underway, expected to be operational by late 2027.
The expertise center will begin recruiting talent to ensure effective utilization of the AI-Fabriek, with plans for it to issue calls for projects from established companies, startups, and scale-ups. The supervisory board will also oversee compliance and financial sustainability of the AI ecosystem in the region, ensuring the AI-Fabriek remains operational after initial funding concludes.
