Air Liquide Advances Ammonia Cracking Pilot in Belgium
Air Liquide's ammonia cracking pilot at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges has commenced operations, processing 30 tons of ammonia daily. This project supports the increasing demand for low-carbon hydrogen solutions, with 31 similar projects identified globally, signaling growth in the ammonia cracking sector.

In November 2025, Air Liquide launched its ammonia cracking pilot unit in Belgium, with a capacity of 30 tons of ammonia per day. This pilot utilizes the proprietary SMR-X™ technology, enhancing energy efficiency through innovative reactor designs.
Currently, 31 ammonia cracking projects are in development globally, targeting a combined hydrogen capacity of 2.5 million tons. Ongoing developments include projects in Germany, Norway, and the Netherlands.
The establishment of new standards, particularly the ISO 19870 series, aims to regulate GHG emissions across hydrogen and ammonia production. These standards, set for publication in 2026-2027, will significantly impact industry practices and compliance requirements.
