Air Products Advances Largest Liquid Hydrogen Facility in Rotterdam
Air Products is constructing a $500 million liquid hydrogen facility in Rotterdam, expected to be operational by 2027, enhancing Europe's hydrogen supply and infrastructure. This initiative addresses the region's hydrogen production targets and supports decarbonization efforts across multiple industries.

Air Products' Rotterdam facility is over 65% complete and aims to be operational in 2027, representing a significant investment exceeding $500 million. This facility will enhance liquid hydrogen supply across Europe, facilitating distribution to sectors such as transportation and industrial processing, and reinforcing the existing hydrogen infrastructure in Rotterdam.
The project aligns with Europe's goal of producing 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen by 2030. Concurrently, Air Products is involved in the UK’s 'Lighter than Aire' project, which seeks to decarbonize industrial sectors in Northern England.
The company's market share stands at approximately 25%, yet it faces increasing competition from firms like Linde and Shell. The success of these hydrogen initiatives will depend on energy sourcing, regulatory support, and broader economic conditions. With rising energy costs and supply chain challenges, the viability of large-scale hydrogen projects may be at risk.
