Albemarle Closes Lithium Refinery, Impacting WA Job Market
Albemarle has ceased operations at its lithium refinery in Western Australia, citing high costs and price volatility. This closure underscores challenges in the critical minerals sector, prompting government interventions nationwide.

Albemarle has announced the closure of its lithium refinery located 150 kilometers south of Perth, impacting hundreds of jobs. The decision follows a span of four years since the facility began processing and is attributed to elevated operating costs and prolonged price fluctuations.
Concurrently, other processing facilities across Australia face similar financial pressures, with federal and state governments supporting operations at Glencore’s copper processors in Queensland and Tasmania's Nyrstar producer. The industry is also witnessing the shutdown of Alcoa's refinery in Kwinana and BHP’s nickel smelter in Kalgoorlie, raising concerns about the stability of critical mineral processing in Australia.
