Albemarle Completes De-watering Process to Advance Lithium Mining Operations in Kings Mountain
Albemarle has completed the de-watering process of its open pit in Kings Mountain, which began in April 2024 and finished in February 2026, treating 1.57 billion gallons of rainwater. The company aims to resume lithium mining operations, following the acquisition of the property in 2015. The treated water was discharged in compliance with environmental permits, ensuring the protection of Kings Creek. The next steps involve continuing the permitting process and drilling for geological data.

Albemarle has completed a nearly two-year de-watering process at its Kings Mountain open pit, treating 1.57 billion gallons of rainwater from April 2024 to February 2026. The treated water was discharged into Kings Creek under a state-issued National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit.
The pit, closed since 1988, was purchased by Albemarle in 2015 for lithium mining. Future efforts will focus on obtaining necessary permits, drilling for geological data, and restoring access roads. The mine is expected to utilize stormwater for operational needs, minimizing demand on local water supplies.
