Alcoa Begins Demolition of Intalco Smelter, Marking End of Northwest Aluminum Production

HYDROGEN

Alcoa has started demolishing the Intalco smelter west of Ferndale, Washington, marking the end of aluminum production in the Pacific Northwest. The demolition project, approximately 45% complete, follows the smelter's closure in 2020 and the loss of associated jobs.

The Washington state Department of Ecology has published a draft cleanup roadmap and will accept public comments until April 15. Alcoa plans to sell the 1,600-acre site to Calgary-based AltaGas, which is interested in developing a green hydrogen facility, but this plan is currently uncertain due to regulatory issues. The cleanup is expected to address localized soil and potential groundwater contamination.
