Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant Integrates Groundwater Treatment
The Alkimos Seawater Alliance has integrated a groundwater treatment plant into the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant to enhance drinking water quality in Western Australia. This innovative design is set to cut chemical use by up to 50%, improving efficiency and promoting sustainability amid rising demand.

The Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant will incorporate a groundwater treatment facility, making it the first large-scale desalination plant in Western Australia to blend treated groundwater with reverse osmosis permeate for final drinking water quality. By leveraging the natural hardness of the groundwater, ACCIONA expects to reduce chemical requirements for potable water production by 50%, enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability.
This integrated approach aims to maintain consistent water quality while simplifying operations as demand rises in Perth's northern regions. The facility also aims to ensure compliance with national drinking water standards, addressing challenges posed by climate change and population growth.
