Alliance Party Proposes KiwiWorks to Enhance New Zealand's Infrastructure Capacity
The Alliance Party proposes the establishment of 'KiwiWorks', a state infrastructure agency aimed at rebuilding New Zealand's public works capability. Leader Victor Billot highlights the negative impact of outsourcing and privatization on infrastructure costs and reliability. The proposal responds to warnings from the New Zealand Infrastructure Commission about significant infrastructure investment needs in the coming decades and aims to restore in-house engineering and planning capabilities within the public sector, funded through tax reforms.

'KiwiWorks' is proposed by the Alliance Party to create a dedicated state infrastructure agency in New Zealand. This initiative aims to address the country's reliance on private contractors due to past outsourcing and privatization practices that have led to increased costs and infrastructure failures.
The New Zealand Infrastructure Commission has indicated that the country will need to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in infrastructure in the future. Recent issues such as sewage discharges from the Moa Point Wastewater Treatment Plant underscore the urgency of restoring public sector capabilities. The funding for 'KiwiWorks' is expected to come from tax reforms targeting speculation and wealth.
